Analysis of changes in grey-white matter contrast in healthy older adults

Abstract

Using structural MRI data from the UK Biobank, this study analyzed regional changes in Gray-white matter contrast (GWC)—a valuable proxy for brain health. Using the Desikan-Killiany Freesurfer brain atlas, we identified “Contrast Gainers” and “Contrast Decliners”. We assessed statistical differences in correlation structures between these groups and found significant disparities. Hierarchically reordered heatmaps and network diagrams revealed unique correlation clusters, offering insights into neurodegenerative processes and brain aging.
